“Is it biting yet?” – Abitibi- Témiscamingue goes into fishing mode

So May begins, finally! We can sense the fishing season opening soon! No, we cannot smell fish yet, but it’s coming! To me, fishing means the imminent arrival of Summer!

In Abitibi-Témiscamingue, there is no need for a yacht to enjoy fishing season. Here, we welcome everybody! On a boat on the Lac Duparquet (Lake Duparquet), on a pontoon on the Kanasuta (Lake Kanasuta), on an ultra-equipped fishing boat with your LiveScope on the Kipawa, from the end of the dock at the cottage or simply directly from the side of the bridge in Mont-Brun, you can always find an accessible spot to cast your line and aim to hook on a beautiful walleye or a northern pike that will make you work for your prize a little!

Fishing: Mindset or Strategy

Fishing is not just a matter of technique. Honestly, I am not really good at it, and I do not watch my fishing line all the time either… I lack a little rigor. Oh well! It's more a question of mindset getting into fishing mode. I love just taking the time to observe nature, listening to the loons calling. It's being in the boat by sunrise and living that very moment and telling myself, every single time: "Oh wow! How lucky am I to do this, at home, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue!"

And while I chill and take my copilot role lightly, there is my boyfriend. His style is all about strategy. Fishing is important, it’s very very serious. He tries to find THE spot, the perfect depth for the water temperature, the right color of jigs… or maybe we should pick the worm harness this time? He seeks the perfect elements to make his experience the catch of his life… even if, technically, she is already sitting in the boat with him!

To watch him take his fisherman role so seriously, almost even more than our kids’ education, it makes me smile. Him, he’s a real sportsman. Me, I hand him my fishing rod so he can install the new toy (he says lure, it’s ok. He can say so) and I become the test subject. Go ahead, try new things, I’ll be over here living my best life.

However, despite my lack of attendance and investment in the fish baiting project, I truly thrive when one bite! That feeling in your stomach when you hook a catch, that “hummpppph”, it’s such an accomplishment (I am barely exaggerating!) and you cannot wait to see it come out of the water.

Coming back from some fishing time with actual catches, it’s fun, but it’s even better when you spend a wonderful day in nature with the people you love!

Preparation is the Key Towards Happiness!

It may seem all easy and accessible, but there are many things to know about:

  • No need for a brand new expensive fishing rod, but on water, put on your life jacket!
  • Always let someone know about your plans and itinerary, about the estimated time of your return. Remember to check the weather forecast before you depart!
  • Grab your fishing permit and find the quotas and the size allowed for the expected species. It can vary depending on the territory (SÉPAQ / ZEC) and on the lake you find yourself on. You can consult all of this here: Fishing in zone 13 | Gouvernement du Québec
  • Finally, I know that you already do this, but take care of nature so we can enjoy it for as long as possible! To do so, do not forget to wash your boat! You can find the washing stations here!
