Access to the region

Travelling to and across the Region

The remote territory of AbitibiTémiscamingue often means a perfect road trip: music on at full blast, chitchat with friends, and boreal forest landscapes to admire as far as the eye can see. But what do you do if you are not equipped with this new technology, known as a car? Do not despair. There are many solutions.

Adventure in Abitibi-Témiscamingue is more accessible than ever!

Located up North from Outaouais, next to the frontier of Ontario, the Abitibi-Témiscamingue can be reached easily: by plane, by car, via bus or even on a motorcycle. At only four hours from Toronto, six hours from Montréal, the outdoors calling becomes an accessible promise.

How do we get to Abitibi-Témiscamingue?

Air Travel

Air travel is the fastest, but also the most expensive, way to go to Abitibi-Témiscamingue. However, it does not service the entire region. For instance, you can fly from Montreal to Rouyn-Noranda or Val-d’Or. It is important to note that airports are located on the outskirts of the urban centres and that you must arrange transportation (taxi, car rental or a benevolent acquaintance) to drive you downtown after the landing.
The airlines serving the region are: Air Canada, Air Creebec and Propair.

Road travel

By car

The road network is well developed, with Highways 117, 101, and 111 connecting the region to major centers in Québec and Ontario. Traveling by car gives you the freedom to stop along the way and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and welcoming small towns. See? We’re not that far away!

Toronto → Ville-Marie : 496 km

Montréal → Val-d’Or : 519 km

North Bay → Ville-Marie : 156 km

Gatineau → Val-d’Or : 421 km

If you’re driving an electric vehicle and plan to cross the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve, make sure to stop and charge at Le Domaine, which offers four level 3 charging stations, a key stop before continuing your journey through this vast territory.

Carpooling

Many people travel daily between Abitibi-Témiscamingue and other parts of Québec (and vice versa) and kindly offer rides. The website amigoexpress.com lists member offers and ensures a quality check for more reliable and safe transportation. Carpooling groups also exist on social media, though they are more informal. Nonetheless, carpooling is one of the most affordable ways to travel, often leads to great encounters, and helps reduce your environmental footprint.

Intercity Bus

While it may take longer, taking the bus is an easy and hassle-free way to get to Abitibi-Témiscamingue from major cities. Autobus Maheux connects the region to the rest of the province with direct routes to Montréal and Gatineau, stopping in various municipalities along the way. Two daily departures are available — one during the day and one at night. Transfers to other transportation companies are also possible for reaching other cities or regions.

Bus services also operate between cities within the region. However, departures may be limited to one per day, so plan accordingly.
