Close but Différent – A tourism campaign to discover the Abitibi-Témiscamingue otherwise

And if the frontier between Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Ontario hid way more than just a simple territory change or a few traffic signs? The new tourism campaign in English, "Close but Différent", offers a wild and humoristic outlook on the cultural and linguistic differences between these two neighboring regions.

Imagined to awaken the travelers’ curiosity, the campaign aims especially towards the English-speaking Ontarian customers, by doubling down on the attractiveness of the cultural change of scenery right next door. It stages the not so serious "scientific researches" of Dr David DeValdorien, a colorful pseudo-researcher and fictional character. His wacky, but charming, discoveries make us dive into a universe where French-speaking culture expresses itself unexpectedly.

Absurd discoveries, deliciously local

Among the most surprising observed phenomenon of our expert "researcher":

  • Lakes that speak French
  • Turtles that roll their “R”s
  • Fries containing 60% more of French

Behind these fictional finds hides a true homage to the tourist attractions, the linguistic specificities and the cultural richness of Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Improbable curiosities, of course… but so revealing when it comes to our identity!

A unique tourism experience to live this Summer

With "Close but Différent", Tourisme Abitibi-Témiscamingue proposes to live a different traveling experience, where the local tourism meets creativity and humor. This campaign invites the visitors to discover the French-speaking Ontario-neighboring landscapes and the warm welcome that makes the region’s reputation.

An original way to highlight the small (and big) gaps that represent our communities’ richness.
