The name burns with mystery, synonymous with great explorers, treasures, gold rushes, boom towns, cosmopolitanism, things country and western, and still more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That era of upheaval is not so long ago. It still marks the architecture of many municipalities in La Vall\u00e9e-de-l\u2019Or\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>False fronts are still found here and there in Sullivan, Malartic and, of course, in Val-d\u2019Or. La Galerie du livre in Val-d\u2019Or, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/hotel-continental-centre-ville\">H\u00f4tel Continental Centre-Ville<\/a> and the little Russian Orthodox church are a few of my favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/heritage-val-d-or-circuit-historique\">circuit historique \u201cH\u00e9ritage Val-d\u2019Or\u201d<\/a> historical walk tells the story of the city\u2019s birth. Through inventiveness and teamwork, in just a few years the pioneers succeeded in building a community from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rich heritage of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/la-cite-de-l-or\">La Cit\u00e9 de l\u2019Or<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/village-minier-de-bourlamaque\">Village-Minier-de-Bourlamaque<\/a> is priceless. Here, we can relive the mining heyday of the 1920s and 1930s. There, I heard about the habits and customs of the mine\u2019s workers. I loved the tales of jokes the miners played on each other. Humour ruled, despite the tough conditions. Every story told was fascinating to me, including the alleged sightings of Howard Hughes at the guest house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mining still plays a huge role hereabouts. A visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/musee-mineralogique-de-l-abitibi-temiscamingue\">Mus\u00e9e min\u00e9ralogique de l\u2019Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue<\/a> reveals the mineral wealth of our land. The museum paints a portrait of the exploration and exploitation both within the region and elsewhere in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/mine-canadian-malartic\">Canadian Malartic mine<\/a> shows how morals have evolved in the industry. The speed and massive size of the machinery impresses young and old alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Little by little <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, a quality lifestyle has been established here. Today, over 10 outfitters welcome visitors who come in search of walleye, northern pike, moose and black bears. There are also a number of fine recreational areas: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/reserve-faunique-la-verendrye-sepaq\">R\u00e9serve faunique La V\u00e9rendrye<\/a> (S\u00c9PAQ) wildlife reserve, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/foret-recreative\">For\u00eat r\u00e9cr\u00e9ative de Val-d\u2019Or<\/a> recreational forest, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/mont-bell\">Mont Bell<\/a> in Senneterre, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Val-d\u2019Or\u2019s artistic side<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/les-jardins-a-fleur-de-peau\">Les Jardins \u00e0 fleur de peau<\/a> are a peaceful haven just a stone\u2019s throw from Val-d\u2019Or. Plants, nature, lac Blouin, water, poetry and art all mingle to create a truly inspiring spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Culture comes alive at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/centre-d-exposition-de-val-d-or\">Centre d\u2019exposition de Val-d\u2019Or<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitibi-temiscamingue-tourism.org\/membres\/boutique-souvenirs-expo-art\">Boutique souvenirs Expo-Art<\/a>, as well as through a host of events, both reflections of the region\u2019s people and the eccentric.
