Put regional products back in the forefront and enhance the pride of <\/span>people from <\/span>Abitibi-<\/span>T\u00e9miscamingue\u2014those are the foundations of Le Prospecteur microbrewery.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can find everything along historic 3<\/span><\/span>rd<\/span><\/span>\u202fAvenue in Val<\/span>d\u2019Or: drugstores, music stores, Italian restaurants, optometrists, banks, a delicatessen, and hotels. All the services are available there. From the sunny terrace located on the top floor of <\/span><\/span>Le Prospecteur microbrewery<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span><\/span> you get a great view of the vibrant life in this central hub of the Vall\u00e9e<\/span>de<\/span>l\u2019Or regional county municipality\u202f(RCM).<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located between the St<\/span>Sauveur Church and La Tani\u00e8re delicatessen, Le Prospecteur microbrewery, founded in\u202f2014, has become this must<\/span>see meeting place where <\/span>visitors and <\/span>local residents stop by to make real contact with producers, as consumers, while enjoying the legendary boreal flavours. On a hot, summer Thursday afternoon, the brew pub and the general store are crowded, since they have clearly become key locations for locals.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boreal Nectar<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A Lebel<\/span>s-ur-<\/span>Qu\u00e9villon native, Jonathan\u202fDeschamps is the dynamic and friendly co<\/span>owner. He has been a boreal spice enthusiast since his childhood in Abitibi<\/span>T\u00e9miscamingue and in Northern Qu<\/span>e<\/span>bec, a region known for its mines and forests. He would go as far as saying that the forest runs in his veins. It was a given that the brewmaster and his sidekick Philippe\u202fLord would emphasize this <\/span>\u201c<\/span>boreality<\/span>\u201d<\/span> in their company and in their brewing creations.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSince the beginning of industrialization, we have lost contact with the product, especially with mine products because, when it comes to gold, we never get to see the final product as it is put in a safe,\u201d explains the one who is overjoyed when he goes <\/span>to<\/span> the woods to gather boreal products. \u201cIt is a bit alienating when the producer and the consumer do not make contact. Abitibi\u2019s <\/span>agri<\/span>food industry is not large, as it is a very industrial region. Yet, it adds so much value to our region.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This <\/span>\u201c<\/span>boreality<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u2014this Abitibi boreal flavour\u2014is a <\/span>largely overlooked<\/span> concept that is often underutilized according to the brewmaster. He says, \u201cYou have to know the spices, as well as appreciate going to the woods and attaching importance to it. This is only the beginning, there is still a lot of work to be done. That\u2019s the gold mine.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This desire to share with people his findings, documented in his gathering log book, led him to fulfil his \u201cmore or less serious boyhood dream\u201d of diving into his own brewing journey. He quit his job as an engineer\u2014after studying at the University of Sherbrooke where he met his future business partner Philippe\u2014and called it quits to start creating little IPA\u202fwonders flavoured with Labrador tea flowers or an\u202fIPA milkshake beer with a white sweet clover flavour.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was not really psyched to work in the environment sector in Abitibi mines,\u201d he says. \u201cIt lacked authenticity and I missed touching the product. Being able to create local craft products is really something that was and that is still near and dear to our hearts.\u201d It is there, among the barrels and the tanks in the brew pub basement, that Jonathan and his employees are brewing their experimentations. The T\u00eate de pioche beer, an American\u202fIPA, is a classic that is sold in growlers. Among the most eccentric beers is the Hyst\u00e9r\u00e9sis, a slightly sour wheat beer made of nineteen vegetables and two fruits.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proud of Their Regional Products<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artisan<\/span>\/<\/span>entrepreneur today grows his own hops and enjoys partnering with local companies and various microbreweries across Quebec. In the same spirit of cooperation, local farms supply his company with local grains and honey.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He describes Le Prospecteur brew pub as the soul of his business, which he sees as a big family consisting of employees and c<\/span>ustomers<\/span>. Many visitors from other Quebec regions or elsewhere come mingle with loyal Abitibi customers. Their favourable reviews contribute to give visibility to Val<\/span>d\u2019Or outside its vast territory. \u201cBrewery tourism has increased phenomenally over the last five years,\u201d notes Jonathan. \u201cMy greatest pride is when someone comes here and say to us, \u2018<\/span>This<\/span> is so awesome.\u2019\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, Le Prospecteur opened its general store. Visitors stop by to buy cool tie<\/span>in products and take<\/span>out beers after tasting, in the brew pub, the result of some 200\u202fcraft beer recipes with proud boreal flavours created by the one who has worked for four years on a 100\u202fper cent local beer. \u201cIt will contain barley<\/span> from <\/span>T\u00e9miscamingue<\/span>, honey, yeast strains, hops growing in my own hop field at home, as well as a great pride coming from our local products.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a proud ambassador who, thanks to his outstanding curiosity and creativity, became well known in a booming industry.
