It\u2019s public knowledge: you need only to say &#8220;biting cold&#8221; and an image of Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue springs to mind. I often feel that people think that we survive the winter, when in fact we know how to enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_940\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-940\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/H.L._LaReine_03092012_086.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-940 \" src=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/H.L._LaReine_03092012_086.jpg\" alt=\"Photographe : Hugo Lacroix\" width=\"576\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photographe : Hugo Lacroix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue is a paradise for snowmobile fans, plenty of snowshoeing trails providing an overdose of fresh air to revive tired eyes from hours in front of cathode screens, cross-skiing trails skirting frozen bodies of water, 22,000 lakes where to enjoy an afternoon skating or a hockey game among friends, dog-sledding excursions, a memorable odyssey in the heart of the boreal forest, etc. Winter camping is always a promise of an incredible adventure: a night in a tent, an igloo, a tee-pee or a yurt, wrapped into the warmth of a fire. With a little luck you may see aurora borealis make a late night performance. Rosy cheeks, orange sky, colorful suits, winter in Abibiti-T\u00e9miscamingue is not in black and white.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_944\">\n<dt>\n<figure id=\"attachment_944\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-944\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Aiguebelle_hugo-lacroix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-944 \" src=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Aiguebelle_hugo-lacroix-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Photographe : Hugo Lacroix\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photographer : Hugo Lacroix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>We celebrate winter with enthusiasm (<a href=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/membres\/fete-d-hiver-de-rouyn-noranda\">F\u00eate d\u2019hiver de Rouyn-Noranda<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/membres\/la-sarre-en-neige\">La Sarre en neige<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/membres\/carnaval-de-lorrainville\">Carnaval d\u2019hiver de Lorrainville<\/a>, Magie des neiges d\u2019Amos, Hiver en f\u00eate de Val-d\u2019Or, Festival du poisson d\u2019Angliers, la F\u00eate d\u2019hiver de Gu\u00e9rin, Carnaval d\u2019hiver de Dupuy, etc.). No, winter is not a time to hibernate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-948\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/glissade-maman-enfant.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-948 \" src=\"https:\/\/abitibi-temiscamingue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/glissade-maman-enfant-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"F\u00eate d'hiver de Rouyn-Noranda\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">F\u00eate d&#8217;hiver de Rouyn-Noranda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We live in a northern region. No wonder our winters are cold. But is the difference in temperature with urban centers in Quebec as drastic as they say? I often hear people say: &#8220;It seems that -30 Celsius in Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue is not as cold as -15 Celsius in southern parts of the province&#8221;. I did my studies in Montreal and Ottawa, and I used to believe that too. There must be a scientific explanation to this, right?<\/p>\n<p>So I called meteorologist Andr\u00e9 Cantin (Environment Canada) to establish the facts. According to Cantin, there are two words to explain this phenomenon: humidity and wind. Because there is very little humidity and wind at -30 or -35, it\u2019s easier to protect oneself from the cold. The temperature is much more tolerable. At -15, there is more humidity in the air. (The level of humidity is higher in the regions located near St. Laurence River.) Humidity makes us shiver because it passes through clothes. And there is more wind, which ices our face. If -15 feels unbearable for our neighbors, just imagine what they think of our region when the weather channel announces that the weather has dropped to -35 in Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue. No wonder they think of us as survivors. But let\u2019s be honest: it doesn\u2019t get that cold every morning. As my good friend St\u00e9phane would say, warm and hospitable people are not afraid of the cold.<\/p>\n<p>So let us put things into perspective. To those who wonder how we can make it through a day at -30, remember this: we dress warmly. It\u2019s as simple as that! When I was a teen and complained about the cold but still didn\u2019t want to wear a hat and mittens, my mom used to say: &#8220;There\u2019s no such thing as bad weather \u2013 just poor clothing!&#8221; She was right. So put on your hat, mittens, scarf, winter suit and furry boots.
